Anti-clotting medicine developed for stroke may hold the key to controlling deadly blood clots caused by COVID-19.

For 20 years, HRI researchers have worked on a new anti-clotting medicine to treat stroke. Now, with emerging evidence linking blood clots to the deadly COVID-19 virus, this drug could save thousands of lives.

“COVID-19 causes a storm of blood clots that cause breathing difficulties, organ failure, stroke, heart attack and death” says HRI’s Professor Shaun Jackson. “If our medicine can control these clots, then organ failure and death in many thousands of cases could be avoided. We want COVID-19 patients reaching for the tissue box, not hooked up to ventilators.”

The new anti-clotting drug has already been proved safe when used in combination with existing blood clotting drugs.

We urgently need funding for global clinical trials to test the safety and efficacy of the drug in critically ill COVID-19 patients. It could then be just months before doctors around the world can use this novel treatment for patients with COVID-19, potentially saving thousands of lives.
