Gawura Scholarship Fund

Gawura Scholarship Fund

$ 50.00

Gawura provides access to education for Indigenous children living close to Sydney’s
CBD, no matter what their background or educational needs. Education gives students access to opportunities and can change their future and the future of generations to come.

  1. Gawura’s model is to start a small group of children from Kindergarten. Children are selected based on the financial need of families and their commitment to be involved in their child’s education from Kindergarten to Year 12.

2. Small class sizes make a big impact on the learning outcomes of every child. Teachers are able to keep a close eye on the individual learning of every member of the class.

3. We provide early intervention for students with learning needs and every child has an individual learning plan. The focus each morning in Gawura is on intense numeracy and literacy work. Students can access specialised learning support from St Andrew’s Cathedral School and if additional support is required, because of our generous donors, we bring in speech therapists and occupational therapists.

4. Gawura’s teaching is culturally authentic. Language and culture are woven into every aspect of the curriculum. Students learn about their history and feel a deep sense of connection which has been shown in to increase school retention and student well-being.

“We know that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children thrive in environments
where they a have strong connection to culture and community.”
